Q:1 Fill in the blanks.

a. The first generation of computers VACCUME TUBEs used.

b. 5th  generation is based on parallel processing and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology.

c. An Abacus has two sections named heaven and earth.

d. Pascal’s calculator was the first ever mechanical calculating machine or calculator with numerical wheels.

e. Analytical engine was the first machine to have a set of programming instructions.

2. Name the following.

a. A technology that makes computers think like human beings. àArtificial Intelligence technology

b. The designer of difference engine. à Charles Babbage

c. A type of computer used for weather forecasting. à Supercomputer

d. A component of the analytical engine. à Store and Mill

3. Answer the following questions.

a. List any three advantages of computers.

Speed: Computers can process complex operations within seconds.

Reliability: They are very reliable; they rarely break or fail.

Storage: A computer can store a huge amount of data.

b. What were the main features of the Arithmometer?

Ans: The Arithmometer could perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and also division. It was based on Leibnitz’s technology.

c. Write a short note on fifth generation computers.

The fifth generation computers are using AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology, which is made possible using parallel processors and superconductors. With the help of AI, computers can be made to think like human beings. The aim of the fifth generation is to develop computer-based devices that can respond to natural language input and that are capable of self-learning and self-decision making.

Examples: powerful desktops, laptops, tablets, notebook and smartphones.

d. Computers are being used in many different fields. However, they still cannot replace human beings. Justify.

Ans:  A computer cannot replace a human being. It cannot think more than what it is programmed for and cannot take a decision in a particular situation on its own. Human beings can perceive a change in a situation and take a different approach based on their experience and wisdom.

e. Vaibhav bought a fourth generation laptop. It has been 4 to 5 years since he has been using the same computer. Now, he wants to work on some applications that required higher speed and memory. However, these applications are not working properly on his present computer. What could be the reason for that? What should he do to solve this problem?

Ans: Because, Vaibhav has fourth generation computer. These computers were having support of Very Large Intergraded (VLSI) circuits. And a newly launched application requires supports of Ultra Large Scale Integration (ULSI).

è    To solve this problem Vaibhav need to upgrade his computer. He needs the system which has fifth generation technology into it.
